The VA Industry
So what's a virtual assistant, anyway? Assistant - that's
easy. An assistant is someone who helps. Lots of professionals and business
owners have assistants. They manage the office, write letters, design
publications, answer the phone, take messages - in short, they help run the
business at hand. But what's this virtual stuff all about?
Virtual means "being in essence," according to the Merriam Webster dictionary.
Essence means "having specific qualities of the original substance." So, a
"virtual" thing may not necessarily be concrete, present, or in view, but it
definitely has qualities allow it to exist.
So, a virtual assistant is someone with specific qualities who helps without
being physically present. Or, for another example, consider the definition from
the Virtual Assistant Chamber of Commerce:
"A Virtual Assistant (or VA) is a
service provider who specializes in providing offsite administrative support
services as an independent contractor and works with clients in an on-going,
collaborative professional relationship.
Virtual Assistants work from their own offices and utilize today's
technology to deliver their services and communicate with clients.
A Virtual Assistant's support is foundationally administrative, secretarial,
and clerical in nature. However, many Virtual Assistants offer additional
specialties that fall under creative and technical services."
